Ever since I came to college, I've had to put up with a lot of things that have just pissed me off. Today's opinion stems from a week of whining and complaining from a group of Chicano Mexicans calling themselves the Movimiento Estudiantil Xicano de Aztlan. Here's the event that was the catalyst for all the controversy:

On Thursday, February 18th, 25 members of the movement walked into the MSU Library and checked out 4,500 books and placed them into a U-Haul truck. The students had no intent to use the books, they merely wanted to protest the lack of Chicano studies at MSU. The books were returned on the following Friday because of a backlash of support and angered students. The group has also tried to have grapes removed from the campus cafeterias and have the Student Services Building named after Cezar Chavez.

Ok, here I go. First off, if this group is trying to get the administration to initiate new classes in Chicano studies, then why are they targeting innocent students in their protest? Let's paint a picture: some student has a big report due on some subject for some class that requires research. Upon entering the Library, he/she discovers that the book needed was checked out by this Chicano group and is sitting in a U-Haul truck, unused. Something tells me this student isn't going to be sympathetic to their cause, rather more angry that the book wasn't there and there's nothing to be done about it. Michigan State University is perhaps the largest and most diverse college in the nation, yet these morons are still complaining that they're not represented. Hello! MSU can't represent every single nationality on the face of the planet. Just because you've been spoiled by your heritage doesn't mean you're going to get what you want.

What the heck is up with renaming the Student Service Building after Cezar Chavez? It was my understanding that campus buildings were named after professors or people who contributed money to the University or were a major influence. Chavez, though a great man in his accomplishments, was never affiliated with this University. Hence, no building named after him, got it?

I'm just so sick and tired of having to put up with all the minorities complaining about how oppressed they are and how they should get all this special treatment. Bull! If anything, of late, the white male has becoming more oppressed than any minority at this University. How many caucuses out there welcome white males (seriously) where they are the predominate figures? None. However, if we were to start some sort of group or caucus of white males we'd be branded as racists and immoral people.

So if the Movimiento Estudiantil Xicano de Aztlan has a problem with what goes on at this University, then they're more than welcome to go somewhere else!
