Scene one:
Our story begins with two young adults, sitting across from each other in a restaurant, eating before they attend their school s dance. The man is dressed in beige kakhis, a sweater of similar colors with some navy blue, and dress shirt, and a navy blue tie. The sweater has a white rose pinned to the collar. The woman is dressed nicely as well, wearing a short light purple dress, with flowers printed on it, with a thin black shall covering her bare shoulders.
The couple talks quietly about their day, though both their minds seem to be somewhere else.
Katie is telling her boyfriend, Jack, of the events of her day, having just returned from a trip to Central Michigan University to tour the campus.
Katie: So then, we had to find our way back to the Center before the start of the next class. It was exciting, but I m really exhausted.
Jack: Yeah, I can see what you mean. Sounds like you had a good time.
Katie: Sure, it was fun getting to spend some time with Amy. We haven t seen each other that much lately.
Jack: So is she still going to Central?
Katie: Yeah.
Jack: That's cool. So... ummmm...
Katie: Jack...
Jack: Yeah?
Katie: I ve been trying all day to figure out how to tell you and I haven t been able to think of any way that wouldn t hurt you. So I m just going to come out and say it: I m going to Central next year.
Jack takes a bite of the sandwich in his hand and chews it for a moment. Katie stares at him, then looks away, knowing this is his way of trying to hide his emotions. Finally, Jack puts the sandwich down, wipes his mouth, pushes the plate away, and folds his hands on the table in front of him.
Jack: So what now?
Katie: What do you mean?
Jack: What do you think I mean? What are we going to do? Central is over an hour away from State. I have a hard enough time with you living 15 miles away!
Katie: I know, I know. But you can't expect me to choose a college based on my high school boyfriend! This is my future we're talking about.
Jack: I realize that, and I never expected you to go to MSU 'cause I was going to be there. If you did I think I'd be just as upset. This is kind of a no-win situation, huh?
Katie: Yeah, I see what you mean. But I'm sure we'll work something out. Remember when we first met? Would you have expected us to be as serious as we are now 7 months ago?
Jack: (laughing) Oh God, I hated you! That was so funny...
The lights dim while the two continue to talk.
Scene Two:
It is 7 months earlier, early August.
Our scene opens with Katie sitting at a small table outside the local coffee house. She's reading a book and glances up nervously every now and then, scanning the parking lot for someone. She is wearing her work uniform, having to be at work in less than an hour.
Jack swings around the corner of the parking lot, spotting the girl sitting at the table. He quickly parks his car and checks his hair in the mirror. Then he strides over to her.
Jack: You must be Katie.
He sticks out his hand.
Katie: And you must be the Jack I've heard so much about.
She takes his hand lightly and then pulls it away just as quickly.
Jack: (sits down) So... how are you?
Katie: Just fine, thank you. How about yourself?
Jack: Can't complain. So where's your friend, Amy? Did she ditch you too?
Katie: She had to babysit her little brother at the last minute. I assume Brian isn't going to show up either.
Jack: Nope, he got called into work. Kinda makes you think, whether we were set up or not.
Katie: Hmph... More than likely if I know Amy.
Jack: So tell me about yourself, seems we have some time to kill.
Scene Three:
Three hours has passed since Jack and Katie's meeting.
Our scene opens with Jack and his friend, Brian, sitting in Jack's basement. Jack is seated on a faded blue couch, holding a Mountain Dew in one hand. Brian is on the other side of the room lying on his stomach, with a bowl of chips sitting in front of him.
Brian: So you just talked to her for 45 minutes?
Jack: Yeah, that was pretty much the extent of it.
Brian: Huh, and do you think she liked you?
Jack: (laughs) Hardly. I talked most of the time. She said maybe 3 words the entire conversation. It was very... awkward.
Brian: Really? That's not what Amy told me. She said Katie was fun and thought you two would really hit it off. Guess she was wrong.
Jack: Yeah, she couldn't have been more. So what did Amy have to say about it?
Brian: Not much, she hasn't talked to Katie since you two met.
Jack: So what the hell was up with you leaving me there alone with her?
Brian: (laughs) Oh, you didn't mind, did you? Amy and I just thought things might go better for the two of you if you didn't have someone to hide behind.
Jack: Normally I would agree. But she was just too much. I can usually handle myself just fine. She was just so... well, not what I was expecting.
Brian: That's surprising, she's always been so talkative and easygoing around Amy and I. Think you might have come on too strong?
Jack: I... I don't think so.
Brian: Yeah, knowing you, Jack... you did. That's ok, I can arrange for you to meet her again, maybe this time --
Jack: (cuts Brian off) No! I mean... that's ok. I don't really think I want to meet her again. She wasn't really someone I can see myself with.
Brian: Ok, man. Whatever you say... but I still think you two would make a cool couple.
Jack: (looks away with a blank expression) Yeah...
Scene Four:
Seven hours have passed since Jack and Katie's meeting.
Amy is sitting on her bed in her room, talking to her boyfriend, Brian, on the phone.
Brian: So you haven't heard back from her, huh?
Amy: Nope, she's still at work. I told her to call me when she got home, though. So Jack didn't like her that much, huh?
Brian: No, not really. He said she was too quiet. And from what he told me, she didn't like him that much either.
Amy: Oh, that's too bad. Maybe we should have gone along. That might have -- Oh, there's my call waiting, that must be her. I'll talk to you tomorrow, ok?
Brian: Sounds good, see ya.
Amy clicks the receiver once and then puts the phone back up to her ear.
Amy: Hello?
Katie: Why didn't you tell me he was going to be that dorky!
Amy: (in a sarcastic tone) I'm fine, thanks for asking. What was wrong with him?
Katie: He talked the entire time!
Amy: Well, from what I hear, someone had to fill the space. You weren't saying anything!
Katie: What's to say? He talked about football most of the time. How can I comment on that. You know I hate sports.
Amy: So he likes them? What's so bad about that?
Katie: Well... nothing I suppose. But God, you should have seen the shirt he wore! It was hideous!
Amy: Oh please. Don't tell me you're about to judge him on the shirt he wore!
Katie: Easy for you to say, you didn't see it.
Amy: And I didn't have to. He's a very nice guy, I think you two would make a cute couple. So do you want to meet him again?
Katie: No, that's ok... really.
Amy: Funny, you almost sound like you want to...
Scene Five:
Two weeks have passed since the initial meeting between Jack and Katie.
Amy and Brian had convinced them to meet again a week ago, and they have talked on the phone twice since then. It is their first "official" date, and the day before Katie's birthday.
Jack and Katie walk into his basement. They have just returned from the movie store where Jack insisted upon renting his favorite movie: The Fifth Element. Jack sets the movie on the bar counter.
Jack: Hang on, I'll be right back.
He exits and returns a few moments later, carrying two cans of Coke.
Jack: I hope you like Coke, this is all we had. Would you like some ice, or a glass, or something?
Katie: No, this is fine, thank you.
Jack: So... how was your day?
Katie: It was fine, nothing too great about it. Just another day. How was yours?
Jack: About the same I'd imagine. Should we start the movie?
Katie: Sure, that's why we rented one, isn't it? (smiles)
Jack: Ok, do you mind sticking it in the VCR?
Without saying a word, she takes the movie and pops it out of it's case, then inserts it into the VCR. While her back is turned, Jack pulls a brand new CD out of his back pocket, and places it on a pile of CDs Katie had brought with her. Katie walks back over to grab her drink and notices a strange look on Jack's face.
Katie: What are you smiling about?
Jack: Nothing, just something that happened today. Say, why don't we listen to one of the CDs you brought?
Katie: Nah, I don't really feel like it. (heads toward the couch)
Jack: (not expecting that response, blurts out:) Are you sure?
Katie: Yeah... why are you acting like this?
Jack: Oh, no reason. I'm just kinda hot. So what CDs did you bring?
Katie: Just some stuff from a favorite band of mine, Ben Folds Five.
Jack: Oh yeah, you mentioned you liked them. Do you have their new CD?
Katie: No, I've been meaning to get it for awhile.
Jack: (pushes the CDs toward her) Out of all these, which is your favorite?
Katie: I dunno. What's it with you and my CDs all of the sud -- (looks down at her CDs) Oh my gosh, how did you know?
Jack: You told me on the phone the other day that you liked Ben Folds Five, and I knew your birthday was coming up, so... taa daa!
Katie gets up and gives Jack a hug.
Katie: That was really sweet of you, thanks.
Jack: Hell, if I had known I was gonna get that kind of a response, I would have bought you two CDs!
Katie: (laughs) What do you say we watch the movie now?
Jack: Sounds like a plan.
The two sit down on the couch and Jack turns on the TV and hits the play button. They sit there for awhile, not very close, but then again, not very far apart. About an hour into the movie, Katie moves a little closer to Jack. He notices, and tries to act like he didn't.
Building up his courage, Jack puts his arm around her. She moves even closer when he does this and rests her head on his shoulder. Soon, her hand manages to find its way to his. They sit like that for another half hour. Then, as the movie nears its finish, Jack suddenly leans over and kisses Katie on the lips.
Jack: I'm sorry, that was inappropriate. I shouldn't have --
Katie: What makes you think I didn't like it?
Jack: Well... I...
Katie: You what? As a matter of fact, I was about to kiss you.
Jack: Then why didn't you?
Katie: Cause you got to it first, silly.
She puts her hand around his neck and kisses him back.
Katie: Now we're even.
Scene Six:
Two months have passed since Katie's birthday.
Jack and Katie are driving back to his house after seeing a movie. It's now late October and Jack is sporting his new varsity jacket, while Katie still insists on wearing her spring coat. Both are wearing jeans with t-shirts. They talk quietly about the movie, and their plans for the next day, though Jack's mind seems to be elsewhere.
Katie: Ok, you've been sitting there hardly saying a word for the past 10 minutes. What's wrong?
Jack: Oh, nothing really. I've just had a lot on my mind the past few... oh, who am I kidding? Katie, how long have we been going out now?
Katie: About 2 months, I think.
Jack: Two months, six days, and twenty-one hours. But that's beside the point. Katie, I love you.
She sits there for a few moments, shocked by what she has just heard.
Katie: Jack... I'm... I'm not sure I feel the same way.
Jack: Oh...
Scene Seven:
One month has passed since.
Jack and Katie are sitting in her room. Her parents have left for the night and Katie decided to take advantage of their absence. Jack is sitting across from Katie on her bed, a game of Candyland sitting between them.
Jack: Woooooo! I'm at the chocolate... ladder... thingy! (throws his hands in the air, as a sign of victory)
Katie: Go Jack. Now you're only losing by half the board.
Jack: (sticks his index finger at her) Be quiet, you!
Katie: (in a sarcastic tone) You're dumb.
Jack: And you're cute! So there!
She looks away for a moment, without laughing.
Jack: I'm sorry, I've been annoying all night. It's just that --
Katie: Jack, I love you.
Jack: I... um... are you sure?
Katie: (smiles) Yeah.
She leans over and hugs him.
Scene Eight:
We return to present day.
Jack has finished eating his dinner and Katie is sipping on her drink. Little has been said since her announcement.
Jack: We should probably go.
Katie: Yeah, the dance has been going for almost an hour.
Jack pays for the meal and they walk out of the restaurant. Jack and Katie hop in his truck (which his dad was nice enough to lend him for the evening) and start off for the dance.
Katie: So what are we going to do?
Jack: (attempts to laugh) I'd imagine we're going to have one helluva summer.
Katie: Jack... I'm... I'm serious.
Jack: I know, I know. Well, I think that we'll have to decide what to do about it later.
Katie: Why not now?
Jack: Because... because I don't want it to ruin our night. I've been looking forward to this for a long time.
Katie: So have I. But we need to deal with this now. If we don t, then it more than likely will ruin our night.
Jack: So I suppose the question of the week is do we want to continue with this relationship.
They both remain quiet for a long moment.
Katie: Jack, you know I love you. But I m just not sure if I can handle a long distance relationship. When I think about going to college, I think about what any other normal teenager thinks about, getting to spend time away from home, making new friends, being on my own... and dating... that s always been something I ve seen in my college plans. Maybe it would be different if I went to State, or you went to Central. But it s not, and it won t be, and we need to face that. I can t cling to a relationship that will more than likely deteriorate over time.
Jack: I... I suppose you re right.
Scene Nine:
It s summer now, both Jack and Katie have graduated days earlier. Jack, Katie, and some of their friends are spending the week at Jack s cabin, which his parents lent him as graduation present of sorts. There are no parents supervising the young adults.
The scene opens with Jack and Katie walking down a gravel road hand in hand. It s dusk out, the sun has set a half hour earlier, and stars are just beginning to show. Jack is wearing khaki shorts with a navy blue t-shirt. Katie is wearing jean shorts with a collared shirt. They walk along for a few moments without saying a word.
Jack: Isn t it beautiful up here? I love the way the stars always manage to poke out one way or another, just in the right time. I could stare at them for hours.
Katie: It s very nice, I m glad we re here.
Jack: Yeah, so am I. So... looking forward to tomorrow?
Katie: I dunno.
Jack: Why do you say that?
Katie: (smiles) Cause I m too busy enjoying tonight to look forward to tomorrow.
She stops and puts her arms around his neck, and pulls him close. He hugs her back. Then, Jack suddenly pulls away, takes her by the wrist, and yanks her towards the woods.
Jack: Come on! I got an idea!
He runs through the forest, with Katie close behind. After they run for a while, he stops in front of a large white pine.
Jack: Yeah, this is perfect.
He pulls a small utility knife out of his pocket and sinks it into the side of the tree. He works at the tree for five minutes, neither him nor Katie saying a word to each other. Finally, he backs away from the tree, revealing that he has carved his initials, J.M. He then hands the knife to Katie.
Katie: What am I supposed to do with this?
Jack: Immortalize yourself.
Katie: If you think I m carving my initials into that tree, you re insane. You know I hate knives.
Jack smiles at her.
Katie: (trying not to smile) What are you smiling about?
Jack says nothing, but continues to smile. Katie stands there for a moment, trying not to look influenced by his stare.
Katie: Will you Oh, fine... gimme that damn knife.
With that she takes the knife and sinks it into the tree. After a long period of time, she backs away, revealing her initials under his. Without a word, Jack takes the knife and carves a small heart between the his initials and her s. He takes a step back, and without even looking, finds her hand and takes it. They stand there for a moment, studying the tree.
Suddenly, Jack pulls her again, and they run farther into the woods. It is completely dark now, Jack leads the way with a small mag-lite he brought. After a minute or two or running blindly through the forest, they come upon a small clearing. They slow to a walk, and continue to the center of the clearing where there is a patch of matted down grass. Jack sits, and Katie follows his lead.
Jack: (points towards the northern horizon) Do you see that bright yellow star?
She nods.
Jack: That's our star. Whereever you are, whatever you re doing, you can always look up, find that star, and know that I ll be looking at the same one, thinking of you.
Without a word, she leans over and kisses him.
They lay there for the rest of the night, not saying a word to each other, but simply being together. After a while, Katie falls asleep on Jack's shoulder, while he remains awake, watching her sleep.
Scene Ten:
It is now July 21st, Jack and Katie's 11 month anniversary. Jack will be moving into the dorms in a little over a month. Katie will be leaving for Central about the same time. Neither has talked much about their plans for this time. Both have been trying not to think about it and live one day at a time. Though they know they must soon face reality and the fate of their relationship.
To celebrate the occasion, Jack has taken off work for the night and decides to take Katie to see her favorite movie, Titanic. They sit together holding hands and sneaking a kiss every now and then. However, as the movie progresses, Jack becomes more and more withdrawn, and eventually removes his hand from Katie's. Toward the end of the movie, Jack suddenly jumps up and walks quickly out of the theater, leaving no explanation, and Katie bewildered. She remains for a moment, then just as suddenly as he did, rises and hurries in the direction he headed.
She exits the theater, expecting (and hoping) to see him buying some popcorn, or getting a drink. But he is nowhere to be found. She rushes out the door, where she sees him seated on the tailgate of his new pickup. It's almost dark out now, the sky is filled with storm clouds that look as if they are ready to burst at any moment. She walks toward him slowly, as she approaches him, he does not look at her nor does he seem to notice her presence.
Katie: (in a soft voice) Jack? Are... you ok?
He remains silent, still not looking at her.
Katie: What's wrong? You can talk to me.
There is still no response.
Katie: (looking almost hurt) If I did anything wrong, Jack... I'm sorry. But will you please --
Jack: (looks up at her) It's not you!
Katie: Then... then what is it?
Jack: (pauses for a moment) It's us.
Katie: What about us?
Jack: You mean you honestly don't know?
Katie: Not if you don't tell me.
Jack: (looks away) I think you do... how could you not?
Katie remains silent.
Jack: (looks back at her) Damnit! Don't you realize? In one month we'll have been going out for exactly one year. One year! It's been the best damned year of my entire life and it has to end! Most couples look forward to their one year anniversaries... I'm dreading mine. I would do anything to prevent it. If I could take this one month we have left and stretch it out forever I would, but I can't. And we have to face the facts, our relationship is, at this point, in vain.
Katie: (stunned) How... can you say that?
Thunder claps in the distance and a light rain begins to fall. Neither notices.
Katie: This has been the best 11 months of my life too. But for you to suddenly say that it's all been in vain! How dare you! How dare you look me in the eye, tell me you love me, and then condemn everything you've ever said. You have no right!
The Rain begins to fall harder and the wind picks up.
Jack: (lowers his head) I'm sorry... that's not the way I meant it.
Katie: (starts to cry) Then what did you mean?
Jack: I... I've been thinking about this a lot lately. We've never really talked about our plans for college. What do you think we're going to do?
Katie: I had always thought we would... stay together. I thought that's what you wanted.
Jack: So did I. But now I'm not so sure. I love you more than anything, but I don't have the strength to deal with a long distance relationship. It would be too much for me. How am I supposed to live an hour away, knowing that I'll only be able to see you once every other week or even less? Sure, I can always borrow the truck from my dad. Maybe even find a ride over there myself. But I think we both know it wouldn't last long that way. You'd find someone else, someone who could be there for you. Who knows? I may even feel the same way. But deep down, I think you know, this is the right thing to do.
Katie: Jack, what are you trying to say?
Jack: What I'm trying to say is that maybe it would be best if we just ended this now, and save ourselves the greater hurt of waiting another month.
Katie: But we still... we still have another month before I leave!
Jack: Katie, we're only postponing the inevitable. We should end it now and get it over with.
Katie: Oh. If that's how you feel. (starts to cry again)
Jack: I'm sorry. But I think it would be better for both of us this way.
Katie: Take me home, Jack.
Jack: Katie... I...
Katie: (in a stern voice without looking at him) Take me home, Jack!
Without saying a word, he closes the tailgate and gets in the truck. Katie does the same and they take off. Nothing is said between the two of them the entire way back to her house. When they pull up in her driveway, Jack parks the car and Katie takes off her seatbelt. She sits there for a moment, and Jack tries to kiss her. She shoves him away and opens the door. She glances at him briefly, a look of pain in her eyes, and steps out of the truck.
Jack: Katie, I lo --
He is unable to finish his sentence, as Katie slams the door shut.
Jack: (finishes the sentence under his breath, looking away) I love you...
Scene Eleven:
Ten months have passed since. Neither Jack nor Katie have spoken since their separation, though both have heard about each other from friends. Katie has dated, but not seriously. Jack carried on a relationship, but for only a month.
Jack and Brian are sitting in their dorm. Jack is typing at the computer ferociously. Brian is resting on a bean bag, listening to his headphones.
Brian: (pulls his headphones off) Jack, I m worried about you.
Jack: (stops typing and swings his chair around) Huh? Where's this coming from?
Brian: I dunno. You ve just really been engrossed in that computer these past few months. When was the last time you went out and had some fun?
Jack: Who cares? I m making a lot of money. That insurance company paid me five thousand dollars to write their webpage. And it only took me a hundred hours. That s fifty dollars an hour! Plus, I just got another commission to design the webpage for that drug store down the road. And they re going to pay me three thousand dollars. If I keep going like this, I ll have my tuition paid off by the start of sophomore year.
Brian: See, this is what I mean, you never used to care about money. I remember when you would rather go have fun with friends, try and meet girls, and live a normal teenager s life. When was the last time you had a date?
Jack: I don t remember...
Brian: Yeah well, I do. It was three months ago, the night you broke up with Kelly. And as I remember, you never liked her that much anyway.
Jack: (gets angry) Look, just cut to the chase. What are you trying to say?
Brian: (blurts out) Why don t you just call her, damnit?
Jack: (stunned) What do you mean?
Brian: I mean that ever since you broke up with Katie you haven t been the same. It was a dumb decision and you really screwed up something special. But it s not too late, you can still fix it.
Jack: I... uh...
Brian: Listen, I talked to Amy last week. She says Katie s not seeing anyone. And from what I hear, she s as miserable as you are. Just give her a call and talk, that s all.
Jack: I don t know.
Brian: Ok, I got an idea. I have her e-mail address, since you re such a computer freak, why don't you mail her?
Jack thinks for a moment.
Jack: Umm... Ok, suppose I did send her some mail, what would I say?
Brian: I don t know. How about have her call you? Or perhaps it could be just a short hey, how s it going mail? Something like that. Don't rush into it... just get to know her again. Then we'll see.
Jack: No. You know I ve never been the type to operate like that. If I m going to get to know her, I want to do it in person. Like the way we started.
Brian: Yeah, I guess you re right. So how are you going to get her to meet you? You don t want to come on too strong. I mean, you have the tendency to do that sometimes. (grins)
Jack: (starts to get mildly excited) Yeah, I ll send her an e-mail and see if she wants to meet somewhere. Do you know if she s at home for the summer?
Brian: Yeah, she and Amy are coming back the day after tomorrow.
Jack: (takes a deep breath) Ok, I ll do it. What's her address?
Scene Twelve:
Two days have passed.
Katie is sitting alone in her dorm. Amy has gone out with her boyfriend for the night. She doesn't expect her to be back until early morning. Katie sits on the couch, reading a book that was assigned for her American Literature class. After a while, she begins to doze off. She decides it s time to give the book a rest. She gets up and walks over to Amy s computer, which she uses every now and then to chat online and will even get an e-mail or two. The Netscape browser loads and she clicks on the mail icon. She has eight new messages, which is unusual. Four are chain letters from some guy Amy had met online, two are solicitations from porno sites. There is also the weekly mail her parents send her. Finally, she comes across an address she never thought she d see: [email protected], Jack s e-mail address. She hesitates for a moment, not fully knowing whether she should read it or not. However, her curiosity overcomes her and she clicks on the message. It simply reads:
i thought that maybe we could get together when you get home...
-jack
Scene Thirteen:
One week has passed.
Jack received a response from Katie 2 days after sending his letter, it read:
monday the 29th, 3 pm, oakland park...
Jack sits on at a picnic table in Oakland Park, the time is 2:56 PM. With him he has a manual on C++ programming and a notebook. He tries to look busy, but peeks his head up every other moment to scan the parking lot. At 3:03, he sees a purple Ford Mustang pull up. Katie steps out of the car and spots Jack sitting on the bench. She is wearing jean with a plain white t- shirt and black tennis shoes. Jack is wearing jeans as well, along with an MSU Spartans t-shirt and brown leather boots. Katie walks up to him and as she sits down, pulls off her sunglasses. They sit for a moment, just staring at each other. Katie is the first to break the silence.
Katie: (looking at the manual) I heard you had taken up computers.
Jack: Yeah... I mostly design webpages for money.
Katie: Do you have your own?
Jack: Yes, though it hasn't been updated in an eon.
Katie: (glances away for a moment) So... umm...
Jack: Heh... yeah... so...
Katie: Well, I suppose we should cut to the chase. Why did you want to meet me?
Jack: (without hesitating) Because I miss you.
Katie: Oh.
Jack: I don't know about you... but it's been hard for me this past year. I didn't want us to end up this way. That was never my intention. In retrospect, I guess I was just trying to prepare myself for what I then thought was the inevitable. But now, I realize that what I did was wrong. I was premature in my actions and maybe just a little bit foolish. I thought that if I ended it then, it wouldn't hurt as much. I was wrong. It hurt a lot, a helluva lot more than I thought it was going to. Katie... I was scared. I was never more scared in my entire life. And for the first time I... I didn't know what to do.
Katie: So what do you expect me to do now? Jump into your arms, give you a big kiss, and say thanks for taking me back, like nothing's changed? Well, a lot's changed, Jack. We both know that.
Jack: I don't expect that...
Katie: How do you know I'm not seeing anyone?
Jack: You're not.
Katie: But what if I were?
Jack: If you were, would you be here?
Katie: No, I guess not...
Jack: Then obviously you weren't expecting this to be a friendly get-together. So tell me, what did you expect out of this meeting?
Katie: I... I don't know.
Jack: (leans closer) I'll tell you what you expected. You expected us to make up and get back together.
Katie: Damn, you're persistent.
Jack: (grins) I've learned that if you want something bad enough --
Katie: Then let me ask you, what did you expect out of this?
Jack: (taken back a little) Well... I... uhh. (regains his composure) I expected us to iron things out and start where we left off.
Katie: Heh. You are persistent. Well, that's not good enough. We messed something up before. So we can't just pick up where we left off.
Jack: But you are willing to try again?
Katie: Not so fast, you're putting words in my mouth. I'm saying maybe we should start over.
Jack: What do you mean?
Katie: I mean maybe we could take this summer to get to know each other again. Treat it like we were never an item. See how that works.
Jack: If you think that's best. Then do you want to have a "date?"
Katie: Yeah, something like that.
Jack: (grabs his books and starts to get up) Then it's settled. I'll pick up Friday at 6 PM.
Katie: wait... wait a minute. I'm not sure if I can --
Jack: (starts to walk away) 6 PM.
Katie simply nods as Jack walks away.
Scene Fourteen:
It's Friday.
Jack and Katie sit on a couch in his basement. They are watching The Fifth Element, much as they did on their first date. Katie is wearing jean shorts and a Central t-shirt along with brown leather sandals. Jack, on the other hand, is wearing jeans with an MSU t-shirt and black basketball shoes.
They are seated a few feet away from each other. Neither wanting to make a move. After a while, Katie begins to inch closer and closer to Jack. Eventually, they are holding hands and Jack has his arm around her. Suddenly, Jack makes a move to kiss Katie. But he is denied because she has already made a move to kiss him. The two meet halfway, both surprised.
Katie: I'm sorry... I shouldn't have.
Jack: (grins) Yeah, cause I was supposed to!
Katie: (smiles back and puts her hands around the back of his neck) Shut up, Jack.
She kisses him again as the curtain closes.
